You are more than the sum of your parts, and I invite you to experience the powerful beauty of fully inhabiting yourself.

Your body is a beautiful, complicated, amazing entity and movement is but one ingredient that is helpful in making a strong and healthy body.
This offering  has foundations in movement and exercise but aims to give you a much more radical foundation to make the movements effective.
I want to show you that you are enough, that you are not broken and that working on all the pieces of you whether they feel messy, complicated or just right is a completely beautiful and valid endeavor.
I want to offer you a hand and walk with you there. I want to give you the depth I have found through movement, self-love, reflection and companionship.

I created this course for Mothers, with any age of child, who are interested in connecting deeply with their bodies and are dissatisfied with exercise that belittles them or doesn’t give them enough information, support or uplifting experience. Unlike mainstream fitness and traditional mind-body products I provide a supportive, effective and integrated course providing self-reflection, movement, meditation and community.
When I was a teenager, I suffered many injuries which were making daily life stuff like going up and down stairs difficult and also was hampering my ability to engage with my deeply passionate desire to be a professional dancer. The traditional PT exercises and conditioning stuff wasn’t helping. I was led to study in in a basic anatomy class at 18. I became obsessed and joyously brought my flashcards and a study buddy to the dog park when my then-dog was a puppy. As I uncovered each layer of anatomy I found some key to helping my own body function again and feel better.

All of this study and insight continued to serve me and stayed with me through college where I was able to get a degree in dance! Along the way I became a Pilates teacher and my natural affinity was for helping people with injuries. As I worked with each person, class or workshop I taught I kept gathering all these bits of experience along the way and was constantly figuring out new ways to work and new skills to add.
I learned to use movement specifically to rehabilitate injuries. I learned to teach Anatomy In Clay. I studied Orthopedic massage and found it paired magically, and seamlessly with all of the movement work.

I was always drawn to working with pregnant and postpartum people and birth. This inclination was heightened once I had my first baby. I sustained a very large labial tear in her birth. After this first birth I felt really lost as to how to help my body and regain strength and integration. All of this felt frustrating because I had so much knowledge but putting it together in this new way, with such a different body, suddenly made no sense! The new challenges of mothering made it feel like a constantly elusive puzzle. I tried a lot of things out as baby grew and developed my own ideas and programs which I eventually started sharing with clients, workshops and through Mama Moves Cards.

I wanted to feel good in my body, I wanted to feel pride in the body I had as a mother because the physical and spiritual adaptations of mothering were HUGE! I wanted to feel connected in my body and grounded in my mothering. I wanted to share movement with my children and to be able to still find ways to do challenging things in my body.

Now, when I work with people there isn’t an exact recipe but there are so may ingredients from my time, tools, exercise and long-term thoughts about the body. Some people need to simply find a way to get into their bodies and move and I can serve that need through inspiring new movement habits! Some people need more specific rehabilitation for a pelvic floor injury like mine and in that case we get into the nitty-gritty of pelvic anatomy, pelvic function and ways to reconnect everything. There is alway some dose of anatomy teaching as it comes so naturally to my process and is true foundation. Another foundational piece is in awakening the curiosity in one’s own body and want it can do. I have found little bits of anatomy information to go a long way in creating a spark of curiosity that serves to set people on a path to healing and movement.

There is always lots of dialogue about the needs, desires, challenges and successes of anyone I am teaching. In listening to their process I can tailor what is shared with them to meet their exact needs. Sometimes it’s a specific exercises (or 3 or 5 or 10!) and sometimes it’s working on peeling back the layers to discover an overall life philosophy they didn’t know was there! Usually it’s a lot about movement with anatomy, function and life goals sprinkled throughout. This work takes commitment and over the years I have discovered that recognizing each small step someone takes towards meeting their physical needs is to be celebrated.

Taking care of the physical body lends itself to opening up space for emotions, life goals, relationships in the community and a sense of purpose. Sometimes it’s as simple as starting with a desire to have a more functional pelvis that leads to a whole life transformation.

As mothers we experience stress, overwhelm and are given incomplete and/or incorrect information when it comes to body movement. We often feel that exercise is an extra “to-do” and getting our body “back in shape” is yet another thing on our never-ending task list. We might question these things while also not knowing quite where the solution hides.
At the same time, there is the subtle yet pervasive expectation that your body will just fall apart when you become a mother. Because of this setup we often experience many physical pains and problems, yet feel powerless over the outcome while we are being held to an unrealistic standard.

Picture
Without the right resources and support, we might feel disenfranchised from our body, weak or disconnected from our own personal identity.
There are many exercise courses to correct physical problems for mothers, and to get them “back in shape” etc. but rarely do they address the logistics of motherhood, or how movement can connect you to your deepest, most powerful and joyful self while delivering safe and useful body-movement information. I want to give you a new way of feeling your body, experiencing it’s strength and thriving in your motherhood.

Feedback from students:

"Bethany is attentive, thorough, non-judgemental and INSPIRES one! It is so evident that she is passionate about her work! She herself radiates health and positivity. Bethany has made me more aware of my "core" and how I use it in my day-to-day life (or don't use it!). Her exercises and stretches I can do in simple, yet profound movements in 10-15 minutes throughout the day. Since working with her I feel stronger, more flexible, more positive, less depression and more energy. I am so grateful for her healing energy and inspiration."

"You're going to want to buy this course from Bethany. There are few teachers I'd trust more with my postpartum body. Bethany has immense knowledge of the body (anatomy, movement, you name it) and she has the tools you'll need to navigate this sacred time and process what's going on physically. The transition into motherhood - whether it's for the first or the fifth time - shouldn't be one of feeling broken and alone and totally confused. And postpartum fitness should be taught in ways that actually fit into a new mother's life and build on her existing resiliency. The Mama Moves Video Course will do all of this and more for you, supporting not just your body, but your entire self. I cannot recommend this enough!"
